(Berlin, March 14th 2012) The design project realized by the TU students Linh Vu, Katerina Navalova, Sara Fontainhas and the PUC student Camila Urzúa for the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin in Tempelhofer Feld was presented into the Akademie der Wissenschaften inside the lecture "Urban development in Berlin since the fall of the Wall"
The workshop proposed the creation of a library for the new century in park of the old Tempelhof airport. This type of library is not just about books, it's about a complete multimedia experience in 60.000 square meters.
This project stands out from the others, as it proposes the remodeling of the old airport building as a library. The first level of the library functions as a public and programmatic connection between Platz der Luftbrücke and the Tempelhof Park. The following library levels are within the old hangars, which have a privileged view and lighting.
The Zentral-und Landesbibliothek is a real project promoted by the Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit. The project itself and the future of the airport building are topics of public debate. For these reasons, the project of remodeling the airport as a library was highlighted by the newspaper Tagesspiegel on February 24th.
